CDPHE updates Suncor cleanup orders

Jan. 06, 2012 - The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has issued additional orders to Suncor as the company works to clean up a release of petroleum products from its Commerce City refinery. In addition, Denver Water wants its customers to know the following:

  • The Suncor refinery located in Commerce City has a private water distribution system. Suncor is responsible for the operation, maintenance and replacement of all its water distribution system, as well as for maintaining water quality in compliance with federal and state standards.
  • Denver Water provides treated water to Suncor at three locations: a master meter located in Brighton Boulevard near Elizabeth Street, and through a distributor, South Adams County, near Garfield Street and 54th Avenue, and Dahlia and 52nd Avenue. Suncor distributes the water to its buildings through its private system on the refinery property.
  • We will work with Suncor to assist them in complying with the CDPHE order by providing documentation and maps of our system.
  • While there are no regulatory requirements for Denver Water to test for benzene in our distribution system, we do test for it and other volatile organic compounds.
  • Tests of water samples taken at five locations around Suncor did not detect benzene.
  • Denver Water monitors our water with staff and electronically 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Denver’s water meets all federal and state drinking water regulations.
  • None of Denver’s drinking water is received from Sand Creek. All of our intakes are upstream of that area.
