Downtown Littleton Pipe Replacement Project

February 7, 2025, update:

Next week, the crew will be working along the following segment of Main Street:

  • South Sycamore Street to South Nevada Street.

The typical work schedule on the project will be Sunday through Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Weekend work may be required throughout the project.

Project details

In early February 2025, Denver Water started a pipe replacement project in Downtown Littleton to replace over 3,300 linear feet of aging pipes — called water mains — underneath the road. The work is taking place in advance of Project Downtown, which is being led by the City of Littleton.

To minimize impacts to businesses and traffic, as well as to reduce the overall construction timeline, work will typically occur at night, Sunday through Thursday, from approximately 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Following the completion of Main Street, crews will work along portions of Rapp Street, West Alamo Avenue, South Curtice Street, South Nevada Street and South Prince Street. Denver Water anticipates the work will be complete by summer 2025.

Denver Water will provide updates throughout the project via email and the social media platform, Nextdoor.

Residents and businesses in the construction zone will receive additional notifications with information about specific impacts they may experience.

Project FAQs

What is this project?

As Denver Water’s infrastructure reaches the end of its useful life, we identify specific water mains in need of replacement to ensure our customers receive a continuous supply of high-quality water. Denver Water replaces these pipes for various reasons, including repairing or reducing the chances of breaks, replacing corroded pipes, preventing water quality concerns, increasing available hydrant flow and improving area water delivery.

It’s important to replace this aging underground infrastructure before any above-ground improvements are constructed as part of the City of Littleton’s Project Downtown, which aims to enhance mobility, parking, pedestrian safety, wayfinding, green infrastructure and streetscape. Visit the City’s project webpage for more information.

How long will the project last?

Denver Water’s pipe replacement work will start in February 2025 and is expected to be complete by summer 2025. Phase one, along Main Street, is expected to last six to eight weeks.

What does the work include?

Crews will work in two-block increments and will dig a trench to install the new pipe. Once the new pipe is installed, it will be tested to ensure there are no leaks and that it meets water quality standards. Crews will then connect the new pipe to the existing water supply system.

Denver Water will also replace any lead service lines encountered during this project as part of our Lead Reduction Program. Visit denverwater.org/Lead for more information.

Will businesses still be open?

Yes. Businesses will remain open throughout construction.

To minimize impacts to businesses, Denver Water is completing this work at night, and we will do our best to ensure individuals are able to safely access businesses that stay open later.

How will the project impact me?

There will be nightly road closures and parking restrictions in place Sunday through Thursday, from approximately 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Before reopening each morning, the trench required to access the pipe will be patched with asphalt and the road will be drivable.

This project requires some water outages. Before any planned water outages, Denver Water will provide detailed information about the date and expected length of the outage to impacted customers, as well as ways to prepare.

While unlikely, emergency water shut-offs may also occur. If this happens, crews will work directly with affected customers.

Will my lead service line be replaced as part of this project?

Denver Water will replace any lead service lines we encounter from the tap, or connection, at the water main, to the first brass fitting inside the home or building. If crews encounter a lead service line at your property, Denver Water will coordinate the replacement with you. For more information about Denver Water’s Lead Reduction Program, visit denverwater.org/Lead.

How long after construction will it take for Denver Water to restore streets, curbs and landscaping?

Denver Water’s trenches will be patched with asphalt each night. Final roadway resurfacing is being led by the City of Littleton and will occur after Denver Water’s project is complete.

Temporary repairs to sidewalks may be in place until permanent restoration occurs. Permanent sidewalk restoration may be delayed in winter months due to low temperatures and poor weather conditions.

Landscaping is typically restored April through October and may be delayed until the next planting season.
