Trees are nature’s original air purifiers. And they bring cooling shade and protective shelter to the spaces around them. That’s why maintaining and expanding the urban tree canopy is vital to ensuring livable communities as our dry climate grows warmer.

Denver Water is proud to partner with The Park People, a nonprofit that’s been planting and stewarding trees across Denver for more than 56 years, to promote and protect our urban forest.

Why plant trees?

Trees provide major benefits for our communities, including:

  • Providing shade, which lowers summertime temperatures and energy costs.
  • Reducing air pollution and improving air quality.
  • Supporting pollinators with essential food and shelter.
  • Managing stormwater, which helps reduce flooding.
  • Beautifying homes and communities!

What kind of tree?

Colorado’s climate can be challenging for many tree species. Visit The Park People’s website to find the Front Range Tree Recommendation List, which was developed by local experts and identifies trees that will thrive and support our region’s ecosystem.

Denver residents

Denver residents can apply to The Park People’s Denver Digs Trees program to receive a free or low-cost tree from the more than 1,000 available every year. Applications for the 2026 planting season are open until Feb. 15.
