Lawns are often a household’s biggest water user, and therefore a great place to conserve water.
First, look for an unused area of water-thirsty Kentucky bluegrass, such as an area that you only walk on to mow. Consider remodeling this area into a water-wise ColoradoScape.
Then, for the remaining lawn that works for you, ensure your sprinkler system is running efficiently. You can have a healthy lawn while also conserving and protecting our precious water resources.
To help, Denver Water is proud to have partnered with Boulder nonprofit Resource Central to offer our customers a limited number of free “Slow the Flow” sprinkler evaluations. Denver Water also communicates about this program directly with customers who have highly inefficient summer water use.
During the sprinkler evaluation, Resource Central’s professional team will be on-site to perform tests and a visual inspection, provide a customized watering schedule, educate you about your system, and recommend ways to improve efficiency and reduce water waste.

Since Resource Central launched Slow the Flow in 2004, they’ve completed more than 37,000 sprinkler evaluations.
And when watering, help us Shave the Peak by setting your sprinkler control clocks to run Tuesday and Thursday mornings, before 3 a.m. (Too many people are choosing Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 5 a.m., straining our system.) Watering two days a week should be sufficient during most of the summer. If needed, add a third water day (such as Sunday) only during periods that are extremely hot and dry. Customers are subject to annual watering rules.
