Did you know that most sprinkler clocks are set to run at 5 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the summer irrigation season?
It’s also about the time many people begin to wake up, take showers and start their morning routines. In the summer, in addition to that regular, year-round morning water use, millions of gallons of water thunder through pump stations and mains to satisfy the enormous demand tied to outdoor irrigation systems programmed to turn on during this time slot.
Denver Water system operators see water use peak at this time throughout the summer.
And accommodating this summer peak water use time strains Denver Water’s system and carries a cost. The utility must build bigger facilities and incur higher energy costs to meet peak demands.
Help Shave the Peak by setting your sprinkler control clock to run Tuesday and Thursday mornings before 3 a.m.
Watering two days a week should be sufficient during most of the summer. Add a third day (such as Sunday before 3 a.m.) only if needed during periods that are extremely hot and dry.
And as a reminder, watering more than three days a week is not allowed under Denver Water’s annual summer watering rules.
