Garden In A Box kits: Spring sale starts Wednesday!
Editor's note: Resource Central's spring sale for Garden In A Box kits kicks off Wednesday, March 11. Denver Water is offering its residential customers a limited number of $25 discounts on water-wise Garden In A Box kits.
What if I told you that you could create your own water-wise ColoradoScape — without hiring a professional landscaper or spending a lot of money?
Well, now’s the time, as record-low snowpack this winter has water managers concerned about the likelihood of outdoor water restrictions this summer. Denver Water is offering its residential customers a limited number of $25 discounts on water-wise Garden In A Box kits from its partner, the Boulder nonprofit Resource Central.
"We are a long way from where we need to be in terms of snowpack; now is a great time for customers to be looking at their yards and thinking about changes they might make to reduce their water demand for this drought, and the next one,” said Greg Fisher, demand planning and efficiency manager for Denver Water.
“Watering restrictions appear highly likely this spring, so what better time to rework even a portion of your yard to feature more climate-appropriate plants and drought-tolerant grasses,” he said.
And if you’re planning to replace between 200 and 2,000 square feet of water-intensive Kentucky bluegrass, Denver Water can help with that too. The utility is offering its residential customers a discount — up to $750 — off Resource Central’s turf replacement services.
Also, if you’re going the DIY route and removing at least 200 square feet of your turfgrass, you can apply to the program and, if approved, use the discount to receive up to four Garden In A Box kits.
The spring sale starts Wednesday, March 11, with the kits available for pickup and planting in May and June. (The fall sale for 2026 Garden In A Box kits starts June 24, with the kits available for pickup and planting in August and September.)

Garden In A Box kits can add pops of color to your landscape using carefully selected water-wise plants that offer interest throughout the seasons, plus food and habitat to local birds, bees and insects. Denver Water has partnered with Resource Central since 2014 to offer these popular, water-wise kits.
Kits include:
- Small “starter” plants that will grow as they become established in about three years.
- Professionally designed perennial gardens with plant-by-number instructions.
- Care and maintenance information.
- Water-wise plants that will help you save at least 7,000 gallons of water over the garden’s lifetime (compared to the same area covered by Kentucky bluegrass).
For those interested in creating a low-water native grass landscape, Denver Water offers eligible customers a free bag of native grass seed and information on the steps to follow for success. Applications to receive a free bag of water-wise grass seed open April 1.
Denver Water is also proud to offer landscape workshops throughout the year. Get details and register for our in-person and online 2026 workshops at denverwater.org/Workshops.
The utility's April 18, 2026, in-person workshop will dive into creating native grass lawns; registration for this workshop opens soon. Denver Water is also a sponsor of Resource Central’s 2026 free webinar series on water-wise yards. The webinars are led by local landscape and horticultural professionals.
